As the third bowler after English legend Jim Laker and Indian legend Anil Kumble, Ajaz holds the unique record of taking 10 wickets in a Test innings. The left-arm Kiwi spinner took ten wickets for 119 runs in 48 overs with five balls to spare against India at Wankhede. Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (captain), Shubhaman Gilra all surrendered helplessly in front of Ajaz. India’s innings ended at 325 runs.
Before Ajaz, English spinner Jim Leker took 10 wickets for just 56 runs against Australia in 1956. Then in 1999, Anil Kumble took 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan. The 22-year-old Kiwi spinner reached that rare precedent after 22 years. However, before this match, there were questions about his chances. He played only 9 Tests for the Kiwis before this match. He even failed miserably in the previous match. That Ajaz finished the entire Indian innings against India with perfect line-length.
The Indian innings might have ended earlier if Mayank Agarwal had not scored an impeccable 150 and Akshar Patel Laraku half a century at the end. But thanks to the great performance of these two batsmen, India reached a respectable place of 325 runs in the first innings.
